Pump Up The Bass! Karen’s Election Night Victory Party

Wednesday, June 9th, 2010

Playin’ some some P-Funk (“P” for political)!
Karen Bass Victory Party_KarenKaren Bass speaks.

We rocked the Karen Bass Election Night Party last night, which soon became a victory party, with her garnering 85% of the vote to win the Democratic Party nomination for the 33rd District Congressional seat.

It was five of us – myself, Keith on percussion, August on guitar and a couple folks I got for the gig – Russell Walters, a bassist whom I play with at the Midtones jam session in Chinatown, and Luis Enrique Lopez on drums, whom I actually met at the Conan O’Brien rally back in January. We did two sets — doing some socially-conscious ’60s and ’70s soul covers from Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye and the Isley Brothers, and another set with “The Karen Bass Song,” as well as tunes from Sam Cooke and Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes.

It was pretty rockin’, even without us there they had some of the best music I heard at any political event. The DJ was Marqueece Harris-Dawson, who is the executive director of Community Coalition, a nonprofit organization that Bass herself started years ago. We fit right in with the soul and funk tunes he played.

Our good friend Eric Garcetti was there as well, who did a welcome address, as well as several other elected officials, many of whom dug us, such as L.A. County supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas, who gave us this, “Yeah, I feel the groove” kinda gesture, which prompted me to spontaneously give him a high-five, which he returned, and Congresswoman Diane Watson (whom Karen Bass will be succeeding), who gave us a favorable gesture as she passed by and told me personally that she totally dug our sound!

In addition, there was a Korean drumming troupe, a drill team from Leimert Park and a Michelle Obama lookalike/impersonator.  A great night for all. Congrats, Karen!

Oh, You Mean THIS Election Night?

Wednesday, June 2nd, 2010

UPDATE: Just got a call and an an email from someone from Karen Bass‘ campaign staff. Turns out the gig they want us to play wasn’t for the November 2 General Election, but for the Primary Election on Tuesday, June, 8. Uh…that’s next week! With less than a week’s notice, I don’t know if I can scrounge up enough people for this, but I’ll give it a shot.

Soul Barkada Performs At Karen Bass Fundraiser

Friday, May 28th, 2010

Karen_Bass_Soul_Barkada
Since performing a fundraiser and a subsequent Election Night Party for Los Angeles City Council President Eric Garcetti, Elson and the Soul Barkada has been in demand on the political circuit, this time, performing at a grassroots fundraiser for U.S. Congressional candidate Karen Bass (pictured above, surrounded by Lisa, Louie, myself and Keith) near Los Angeles’ Koreatown district earlier this evening.  Yes, it’s one of those rare occasions where my musical and community lives intersect.

With the fundraiser taking place in the backyard garden of  private residence, it was just Keith, Louie, Lisa and I doing a semi-acoustic set, where we mixed originals with relevant covers, like Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Goin’ On” and Harold Melvin and the Bluenotes’ “Wake Up Everybody.” It was a real bare-bones setup, with Louie and Lisa doing backgrounds, Keith on percussion and me alternating on keyboard and acoustic guitar (I was wearing shades most of the set, not to look cool, mind you, but because the sun was shining directly at us)!

But the big hit of the night was “The Karen Bass Song,” a fun little p-funk (political funk, that is) ditty in the similar vein as last year’s “Are You Ready (For Garcetti)?”

The chorus goes:

Karen Bass, she’s our Democrat
Karen Bass, you know she’s built to last
Karen Bass, them bills she’s gonna pass
Karen Bass…SHE GONNA KICK SOME BUTT!

The candidate and the crowd (clapping and chanting along) loved it, but most of all her campaign staff totally dug it. So much, that they asked if we could play at her Election Night party in November! Consider it booked!

Also, one of the attendees of the event was Janelle So, host of the Filipino community talk show Kababayan LA, which airs on KSCI 18. We were introduced to her and she wanted to book us as guests on her show next month.

Things have been happening…

Obama Song!

Monday, January 19th, 2009

To commemorate the inauguration of President Barack Obama, Elson and the Soul Barkada, (temporarily renamed “Elson and the Soul Barack-ada”) made a fun parody of Carl Carlton’s “She’s A Bad Mamma Jamma” and made “He’s-a Barack Obama.” Watch the YouTube video here!
